Former Bird Marella principal, The Honorable Hernán D. Vera, is named among President Joe Biden’s seventh round of judicial nominees for the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
During his five years at the firm, Judge Vera led a successful class action and complex civil litigation practice before being appointed to the Los Angeles County Superior Court bench in November 2020.
Prior to joining Bird Marella, Judge Vera proudly served as President and CEO of Public Counsel, the nation’s largest pro bono law firm. In leading that organization, Judge Vera developed an outstanding reputation within the legal community, particularly for his tireless efforts advocating for under-represented constituents in the Latino and other minority communities.
If appointed, Judge Vera would be the second federal judge from Bird Marella, following founder and senior counsel, Judge A. Howard Matz, who served on the District Court bench for nearly 15 years.
Managing Principal Paul Chan expresses his support for Judge Vera, stating, “Hernán possesses all of the qualities necessary to succeed and thrive as a federal judge. His outstanding judgment, thoughtful and considered approach to decision-making, and true empathy for fellow community members are hallmarks of his character. We have no question that if appointed, Hernán will serve with distinction.”
