The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles filed a plea agreement Thursday in which Dr. Andrew Sun pled guilty to drug trafficking for prescribing hydrocodone (Vicodin), Soma, and Xanax. This is just one of many such cases and it appears to have been pursued in the usual way, i.e., a joint federal-state investigation, numerous monitored purchases by undercover law enforcement posing as patients, etc. Charging doctors with drug trafficking raises many interesting potential legal issues but we won’t see them in this case since there was a guilty plea. The doctor’s age is a wild card that could have a significant impact on sentencing but other doctors have been sentenced to substantial prison sentences on charges like these.
