On July 28, 2022, U.S. District Judge John Z. Lee granted final approval of a $92 million settlement for users of TikTok in one of the country’s largest and most high-profile class actions. A nationwide group of plaintiffs alleged that TikTok violated consumer protection and data privacy laws.
In awarding attorney’s fees, the Court credited Bird Marella as one of the first two firms “to begin investigating the data privacy allegations against TikTok in January 2018, and… the first to file a complaint against TikTok.” Ekwan Rhow, Tom Freeman, and Marc Masters led the Bird Marella team that sought justice for an estimated 89 million Americans whose privacy rights were violated by the social media company.
