In a pro bono partnership with the Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice, attorney Michael Landman aided a domestic violence survivor whose husband had used her identity to accrue significant federal and state tax liabilities.
Mr. Landman, a former trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice’s Tax Division, helped the client navigate the process of documenting the identity theft and presenting the issue to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the California Franchise Tax Board (FTB). Mr. Landman successfully convinced the IRS and FTB to favorably resolve his client’s identity theft claims and to remove the tax debt that the client’s ex-spouse accrued in her name.
