In a pro bono matter with the Los Angeles Center for Law and Justice (LACLJ), Bird Marella protected an immigrant survivor of domestic violence from family separation by winning termination of her children’s removal proceedings, and ultimately obtaining Special Immigrant Juvenile Status for the children to stay in the United States.
Bird Marella attorney Elliot Harvey Schatmeier worked with the LACLJ staff to defend the children in their removal proceedings and obtain legal status. Through the team’s efforts, the family is no longer in danger of deportation, and two of the teens successfully acquired work permits — significant steps in their journey to young adulthood.
The LACLJ has provided legal advocacy to low-income and primarily immigrant and Latino populations in Los Angeles for over 40 years.
